BBC micro:bit: Get creative, connected, coding!CLICK HERE TO REGISTER
Tuesday, May 18, 2021 - 6:00 PM

Developed by the BBC (yes, that BBC – the British Broadcasting Corporation), micro:bit is a very low cost pocket-sized computer that introduces you to how software and hardware work together. It has an LED light display, buttons, sensors and many input/output features that, when programmed, let it interact with you and your world.

Rockford MakerSpace’s workshop will cover learning how to get the micro:bit working, program its features and create your first projects. A micro:bit will be available for workshop participants, however we also encourage you to purchase your own (www.amazon.com/micro-bit-BBC2546862-Micro-go/dp/B01G8X7VM2). Computers will be available or you may bring your own laptop.

The workshop is geared to complete novices of any age. We encourage parents and kids to participate together (no unaccompanied minors please). Educators interested in integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) into their learning environment are welcome to participate.

Note: The workshop will be presented in a way to allow for social distancing. All participants must wear masks and not have any signs of illness.

Have you ever seen 'Forged in Fire'? Well, don't just WATCH it -- why not DO IT?

Attendees will make their very own knife, harden and temper it.

This workshop will be presented by the experienced and talented Dennis Neubauer, who is widely known for his forging workshops.

We will begin at 9am. The ending time is scheduled for 5pm, but we expect to finish earlier.

We will be working with hot metal; attendees should dress appropriately. Leather gloves and apron are not required, but you may bring them if you have them available and wish to do so. We have a limited quantity of safety glasses and hearing protection available; attendees may bring their own if they wish.

Thursday, June 3, 2021 - 6:00 PM

"Soldering irons burn, wire leads are pokey. Come watch me make this board all hot and smokey."

Learn the art of reflow soldering and take your circuit skills to the next level. SMT, or surface mount technology, components are found on the surfaces of circuit boards, but do not have thru-hole leads. While they can be soldered with a soldering iron, hot air reflow is a thousand times easier. By using surface mount parts, instead of thru-hole parts, you can make your circuits half as large. This soldering class will not use any soldering irons, making it safe for practically all ages. We will assemble two different circuit boards which you will then take home.
Cost: $15.00 (non-members) / $10.00 (members)
