IoT: Arduino & Raspberry Pi (comprehensive)CLICK HERE TO REGISTER
Sunday, May 22, 2022 - 2:30 PM

Have you heard about the Internet of Things (IoT), Arduinos and Raspberry Pis and want to know what all the excitement is about? Did you receive an Arduino or Raspberry Pi as a gift and want to actually do something with it?

This 5-part series begins with the basics and helps you work through to advanced features and capabilities of these devices.

Session 1: In this brief presentation, you will be introduced to the Arduino open-source electronic prototyping platform, the Raspberry Pi single-board computer hardware and software and other IoT hardware and software. You will learn what they have in common, how they differ, and some of the common uses of each.

Session 2: In this session you'll learn how to install Raspbian (Linux) on the Raspberry Pi, configure the system, and use the GUI-based operating system and its various packages.

Session 3: In this session, you'll learn how to extend the operating system, use the command line and do some rudimentary scripting. This is primarily a Linux course, but we will introduce basic control of the Raspberry Pi GPIO ports from the command line.

Session 4: This session is a hands-on class teaching introductory Python language programming. The language basics will be taught, and we will introduce using Python to implement rudimentary control of the Raspberry Pi GPIO ports.

Session 5: This session is a much more in-depth hands-on class teaching how to interface various hardware input and output devices to the Raspberry Pi, and monitor/control them with either Python or Linux command-line scripting.

Cost: $45.00 (non-members) / $20.00 (members)

Sunday, May 29, 2022 - 2:30 PM

A hands-on class teaching attendees how to install Raspbian (Linux) on the Raspberry Pi, configure the system, and use the GUI-based operating system and its various packages.

This is the second of five sessions in our Raspberry Pi training series. The next session will be Advanced Linux.

This is part of a multi-session event. The cost is included in the first session. You must register for the first session to attend this session.
Intro to Laser Cutting/EngravingCLICK HERE TO REGISTER
Friday, June 3, 2022 - 7:00 PM

This presentation will be a brief introduction to using the 150-watt laser cutter/engraver at Rockford MakerSpace, and will include a very brief overview of vector-based drawing programs and the laser hardware itself. Each attendee will take home a laser-cut/engraved souvenir. The presentation should last about one to two hours.

This presentation is FREE TO MEMBERS of Rockford MakerSpace.

Note that Rockford MakerSpace membership is NOT required to attend this presentation, or to use the laser cutter/engraver during this event, but membership IS required to do so outside of this presentation. Please see our wiki for membership information.

Cost: $10.00 (non-members) / FREE for members

Basic Glass Etching WorkshopCLICK HERE TO REGISTER
Saturday, June 11, 2022 - 2:00 PM

Learn to use etching cream to apply simple designs to glass.

We will be using our vinyl cutter to create stencils, then using glass etching cream to etch the glass. Attendees will take home the etched glass item they create, chosen from many pre-existing designs available. All materials will be provided.

We also offer an Intro to Vinyl Cutting workshop where you can learn how to create your own designs for etching future projects!

During your visit, take a brief tour of our facility so you can see all the other things we have to offer, such as our 150-watt laser cutter/engraver, 3D printers, woodshop, CNC mill, electronics lab, screen printing, crafting ... and more!

Note: Under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Cost: $15.00 (non-members) / $10.00 (members)

Saturday, July 9, 2022 - 2:00 PM

Have you heard about the Internet of Things (IoT), Arduinos and similar systems, and want to know what all the excitement is about? Did you receive an Arduino as a gift and want to actually do something with it?

Want to learn how to read sensors, drive motors, and blink LEDs? Never programmed before but you're interested in learning?

Want to find out what the fuss over the Arduino microcontroller ecosystem is all about? This class is perfect for you!

We will journey, step-by-step, through the basics of electronics through hands-on labs where you (the student) build breadboard circuits and program the embedded software to bring them to life!

Delve into more advanced features in (optional) Part 2! (Separate registration required.)

Note: Under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Cost: $15.00 (non-members) / $10.00 (members)
